Ivy Margaret Wharton, a true original

Bonnie's Column

May is Older Americans Month, so we celebrate the brave performers who do theatre in their later years. It's a privilege to work with so many zesty seniors who have decided to spend their time as performers, directors, or producers. We celebrate you.

I am reminded of one of my first actors, Ivy Margaret Wharton. She had no prior training but when she took the stage with her British accent to act and sing, the audience was mesmerized. Ivy honed her skills and advanced into films and commercials which supplemented her meager income. For Ivy, the world was never the same once she began to perform.

Now, when I work with older performers, I am reminded of Ivy, and how Senior Theatre completely changed her life. She used to always say, "I don't know when I've ever been so happy."

This is why all of us at ArtAge do our connect great materials and inspiration with those who take the risk to perform and are richly rewarded. We salute you this month!

Yours in Theatre,

If there’s one thing I’ve learned in my years on this planet, it’s that the happiest and most fulfilled people are those who devoted themselves to something bigger and more profound than merely their own self-interest.

Summertime Learning

We are always excited to invite you to attend workshops and conferences but they are especially fun as a summer vacation. Try these:

AACTFest 2017 National Festival
June 26 to July 1 in Rochester, MN

When community theatre folk gather, it's special! This Festival is a large celebration with a wide variety of offerings. In fact the featured event has been building for two years since community theatres from around the nation competed for a chance to perform at the upcoming National Festival. Now you can see them in action. In addition, attendees can take part in a theatre management or a youth leadership conference, watch four productions in the AACT Youth Fest, and see the AACT Design Exhibition & Competition. If that wasn't enough, there is a new monologue competition, educational workshops, vendor displays, and networking opportunities. You won't want to miss the awards presentation. By the end of the Festival, the new acquaintances you have made will feel like old friends!

Profiles in Senior Theatre:
Sandy and John Laszlo

When John and Sandy Laszlo retired 10 years ago, they never imagined they would be working together as actors, playwrights, costumers, and directors until they discovered Senior Theatre. Both are members of The More or Less Players in Roswell, Georgia. They have acted in dozens of plays, designed costumes, created props, and done publicity for their theatrical productions. As they say, "What a rewarding way for a couple to share, grow, and have fun!"

Bob Redd's four books of short and easy plays have been popular for years. He began with 21 New, Humorous Short Plays and Scripts, then he wrote ones with 23, 25, and 31 shows. See what's in each book by clicking 21, 23, 25, and 31.

Funny Stuff
Olga Sanderson raised a family, was actively involved in her community, and became a playwright, all while being blind. Nothing stopped Olga. To write her shows, she dictated the plays into a recorder so a colleague could type them for her. A local performing group staged the shows so she could work out the kinks. Though Olga faced adversity, her plays are filled with humor, intellect, and determination combined with a feisty spirit. We honor her during Older Americans Month!

Funny Stuff has 10 ten-minute plays each with Olga Sanderson's fun sense of humor. Take a look. Get the shows individually for $10 or get all of them by purchasing the book.

Seniors Still Acting Up: Short Comedies
The Young at Heartland playwrights, an outreach program of the Heartland Theatre, wrote this vibrant collection of 16 short plays and monologues. You’ll find it easy to use these 4-6 minute comedies with 1-3 actors as readings, in class, or performed on stage. Click here to read more.

Readers Theatre: Legendary Ladies and their Gents

For ten years, author Marilyn Warsofsky and her Senior Theatre company toured these shows throughout their community. You'll find that actors love the solid theatre and audiences enjoy the rich history of Molly Brown, Amelia Earhart, Annie Oakley, The Harvey Girls, and Pauline Cushman, a Union spy.
