Bonnie's Column: Celebrate One Person Shows

All around the country individual performers take their show on the road. This month we’re saluting the lone stalwarts who schlep and strut their stuff on stage.

Some folks perform one person shows based on history or literary characters like the 91 year old actor who I spoke with today who stages Edgar Allen Poe to wonderful applause. Others present dramatic monologues and a wide variety of theatrical material, sometimes using music to round out their performances.

Then, there are the more unique acts like the one performed by Roberta McElroy, a ventriloquist. She says, "I find our audiences really enjoy just talking to my 'friends' and they will remember them way before they remember me!"

Later in this e-newsletter you’ll read about a comedianne who uses humor to bring down the house.

We salute these one person shows!

Tuscarora Films is in the home stretch of its campaign to fund a documentary featuring The Silver Stage Players, a Senior Theatre troupe from Knoxville, TN. The program profiles the many benefits seniors derive from participating in theatre.

Because Senior Theatre is close to your heart, please help.

Tuscarora Films is relying on lots of people to provide small measures of financial support to bring this vision to reality. Please visit the link below to learn more about the project and consider supporting it financially.

The campaign ends on May 21 and is about half way to the goal, so be sure to give and spread the word now!

Do you want to end your summer with a huge bang? On August 26 - 31 attend the Encore Institute at Chautauqua Institution in beautiful Chautauqua, NY to get your theatre juices running. Immerse yourself in days packed with opportunities to learn, to challenge yourself, to try something new, to be courageous, and to meet new friends from around the country.

The theatre program is headed by Stuart Kandell, Founder of Stagebridge Theatre. Participants will lodge and enjoy marvelous dining at the elegant Athenaeum Hotel. The gorgeous lakeside setting and the nearby porch become the scene of lively conversation after the evening concerts.

Your days will begin with a movement class followed by scene study. Actors can also take a voice class under conductor, Jeanne Kelly, or a dance class with Shula Strassfeld from Dance Exchange. Actors, singers and dancers will join forces to present a musical theatre piece. The institute will culminate with a pubic concert.

Arlene Ransom says, Rave Reviews!!! The Institute exceeded my expectations!

Customers love Readers Theatre Karaoke®!

It's karaoke without the karaoke machine! Simply insert the DVD. The text of the script appears on a TV screen so your actors can read along. Background music and sound effects are on the disc and timed to the script so they come in right on cue as the actors deliver their lines.

There are endless options on how to perform Readers Theatre Karaoke®. Our customers have come up with creative configurations such as having the actors in the audience, or having a conductor lead the actors.

Have fun with these two plays: Roxie McCoy…Private Eye, an old-fashioned detective story with Roxie who is a street-smart, no-nonsense private eye, and Love Conquers the Wild West, a love story and melodrama set in the 1870's.

Both include the script, background music, and sound effects built in, cued, and ready to perform.

Meet Jeanne Nott, Comedianne
Jeanne Nott
Jeanne Nott

Jeanne Nott's father taught her the joy of comedy by urging her to "leave 'em laughing!" She's been using it ever since. A great sense of humor and solid joke telling landed her a job with the Governor of Colorado. Now, though Jeanne uses humor on her job, she's expanded to become a stand-up comedianne. She performs, "senior humor," to help audiences see the brighter side of life.

As a comedianne, Jeanne has learned how to select material that will tickle her audience's funny bones. Then, she hones the content so that it flows easily and builds to a great punch line. No props, no costumes, just great material delivered well has helped her become a much-requested performer.

Try stand up comedy.

Adrienne's Actors in performance

Each month we shine the spotlight on one of our current Senior Theatre Resource Center members. This month we feature Adrienne Omansky of California. She is the director of Adrienne's Actors, which trains older adults in commercial and theatrical acting.

This spring they have been busy educating older adults about Senior Fraud. Their Stop Senior Scam program received a commendation in April from California State Assemblyman, Mike Feuer. Look for Adirenne's Actors in recent films and commercials for GEICO, Goya Foods, Volkswagen, Universal Studios, and in an upcoming episode of Discovery ID. Adrienne’s Actors perform in local senior facilities, libraries, schools, and hospitals, sharing their many talents.

Like Adrienne's Actors, you can become a member of the Senior Theatre Resource Center. As the central clearinghouse for Senior Theatre information, it connects, promotes, and encourages excellence. If you're doing exciting work, you need to have a presence. Wonderful things have come to our members!
