Bonnie loves teaching Senior Theatre classes!

Bonnie's Column

As many of you know, I am a big believer in classes. They help novice actors gain basic skills while accomplished actors refresh theirs as the group blends into a cohesive unit. In classes you can try out new plays so you'll know what you want to use in your next production. Most of all, they are great fun, filled with lots of laughter! To help you create, promote, and conduct classes, take a look at Teaching Senior Theatre Classes.

Some of my best times have been spent teaching theatre to older students. I hope you discover, as I have, that it is one of the most creative, stimulating, and enjoyable things you've ever done!

Yours in theatre,
Bonnie Vorenberg, ArtAge President

Profiles in Senior Theatre:
Marge Wein

Here at ArtAge we have the privilege of working with many older performers and directors, but Marge Wein stands out. At 96 years old, Marge directs The Azaleans, a group of 20 seniors in Pensacola, Florida.

When Marge moved into retirement housing, she wanted to put her 50 years of experience in radio and theatre to use, saying she "just HAD to have theatre in her life!" Now, seven years later, Marge directs two productions per year. She loves comedies and is especially fond of The Naked Man on the Couch, one of ArtAge's most popular plays.

Marge says that she loves her work because it brings theatre to a group of older adults who have little opportunity to attend a play. It also gives "great life to her audiences while providing intellectual stimulation." The company fills the 200-seat house every performance. With rave reviews, the audience members are always asking her, "So what are you doing next?"

Marge's favorite quote is, "Age is only a number, not who you are." We commend her and all the other 90-year olds who take the challenge to bring theatre to the lives of older adults!

Halloween and other Fall Shows

It's time to begin preparing your Fall shows. Try one of these or put together several on a theme:

Head First or Feet First?

Did Malachi Throckmorton accidentally fall from the balcony of The Copa Coconut Hotel or did he commit suicide? A hysterically zany 1940s-style mystery-farce.

Who Shot Fred?

Who could have shot Fred at the Moon Over Poughkeepsie Hotel? This hilarious 1940s-style whodunit takes place in a residential hotel catering to seniors. Sure to keep audiences guessing!

The Haunted Holiday Hotel

The Haunted Holiday Hotel is jam-packed with zany characters and mysteries to solve. The fun and laughter can be enjoyed all year long!

Angel in Disguise (or how to get your husband to wear a costume)

What's a woman to do if she can’t get her husband to dress up for a costume party?

Witch One

Life is always about the unintended consequences, even if you are a witch!

A Profusion of Roses

With two strong women’s roles, this show brings a mother, daughter, and an absent “sister” into a twisty, mysterious relationship.

Everything Blows Away

A short play between a couple and a bunch of leaves. Lovely!

Get Your Flu Shot!

When you need to convince people to get the flu shot, sometimes entertainment works the best and is the most convincing. Fun show!

Murder at the Movies

This comedic farce takes place in front of a live studio audience in Hollywood where an actor is stabbed by a real knife instead of a stage knife!

Jus' Tus

Mystery surrounds the death of Nell’s husband and Sheriff Wally is suspicious. Nell has doubts too.

The Day They Kidnapped Blanche

Blanche, a retired teacher, is having a blast starring in a community theatre comedy, until...

Roxie McCoy: Private Eye

Roxie is a street-smart, no-nonsense private eye. In this comic sketch, Roxie comes to the aid of an English Baroness with a secret.

Skits for Seniors: Holiday Plays

A collection of 34 skits for 27 different special days and seasons throughout the year, including Halloween.
