Bonnie on the Oregon Trail

Bonnie's Column:
Where is your Oregon Trail?

I just returned from our vacation to eastern Oregon where my husband and I went to discover the Oregon Trail. Between 1841 and 1869 most of the 400,000 settlers walked its 2,170 miles from Missouri to Oregon and surrounding states. It took six months and was a harrowing journey over mountain ranges, through deserts, and into the lush lands in Oregon. Now, 175 years later, the wagon wheel ruts are still visible.

The people who survived the journey brought their strength and values with them, forming the bedrock that makes up the residents of the West. For me, I've always been amazed at what emerges when someone has endured and lived a 'tell about it' journey.

For us in Senior Theatre, we're on a journey also...to bring the arts to under-served audiences, to entice older adults to be brave enough to take to the 'boards' and be on stage. It's a struggle that may not require the same amount of sweat and toil as a trip on the Oregon Trail, but it's still a challenge. When it's met with success, the end result is the same...you won't be awarded with a homestead but you'll get the satisfaction of knowing that you've conquered and won.

So, I ask you to, as the sign says, "Add your story to the Continuing Oregon Trail Story!"

We were so excited to have worked with Rebecca on this article because she understands the value of Senior Theatre!

Why I do Senior Theatre:
Joyce Stern Greenberg

Joyce (left) and Sandy in Committee of Two

Joyce writes, "Since I'm lucky enough to have reached senior status, why should this time in my life be any different from all of my other phases?

All of my life, I have been in the arts, from being a show biz kid to a singing comedienne, actress, drama teacher, director, and writer/lyricist. Working with folks who are always ready to 'put on a show' gives my life enrichment and joy, which I love to share with my talented, seasoned casts.

Senior Theatre confirms what I've always known...that doing what I love, alongside others who feel the same way, encourages camaraderie, creativity, expanded viewpoints, and the joy of bringing laughter to others."
