Bonnie's column: No fear
Bonnie L. Vorenberg

With all the crazy events in our world lately, it might make you want to cower under the covers or at least stand still and not do anything. Well, I'm here to encourage you to keep going. Especially at times like these, we need theatre more than ever. Our audiences need to be entertained and all of us, actors and directors, need a distraction from reality.

Don't stop, pause, or hesitate. Most of all, don't be fearful. I saw this quote the other day and think it's very pertinent now:

Don't let fear make the decisions for you.

Onward...and Happy Thanksgiving!

Yours in theatre,

Bonnie Vorenberg, ArtAge President

Judith Allen: Playwrighting sustains
Marty's Bromance
Marty's Bromance
A few months ago, we learned that one of our playwrights, Judith Allen, was diagnosed with lung cancer. She endured surgery followed by chemo. During the process, she wrote and revised a full length show and two monologues. When she was feeling better, she was able to watch her show being staged in the Hollywood Fringe Festival.

Judith attributes her fortitude to being able to write and to her desire to see her show performed. She says, "As every playwright knows, there's nothing that lifts the spirits more than having your work performed. It's the best medicine I could have asked for!"

You'll enjoy Judith's plays:

Secrets in the Clouds (15 minute comedy, 2 women)
Liz and Elsie, friends for 30 years, meet in the afterlife, where secrets are revealed as they play games and drink Irish whiskey. Wonderful, lively characters full of punch.

Marty's Bromance (15 minute comedy with 2 men, 1 woman)
Laura and Marty have been married for 30 years but when Marty is forced into early retirement, Laura tries to help with unexpected results!

We're happy to report that Judith is healthy now, thanks in part to her passion.

Silent Movie--so funny!
Silent Movie--so funny!

When we talked with Illinois-based Michaellene Barry, we learned about her performance earlier this month. It was an exciting conversation because although we offer a lot of shows that fit together on a program, her slate is one of the best. It features a variety of writers with their unique voices, all humorous. Michaellene says, "We had two sold out houses and it went great!"

Try her program for your next production:

The DMV or What's my Sign? (5 minute comedy, 2 women)
Things at the DMV, Department of Motor Vehicles, aren't always easy. The life of an examiner can be difficult!

Little Bundles of Joy (10 minute comedy, 1 man and 1 woman)
Two newborns are in the hospital struggling to make sense of their amazing new situation.

Tech Support (15 minute comedy, 2 actors of either gender)
An older person calls tech support for help with a new computer and printer. On the other end, somewhere in Calcutta, India, tech support is anything but helpful.

It's Hell Gettin' Old (7-8 minute comedy, 3 men)
Three old codgers sit in the park and soak up the sun while they reminiscence about the past and their youth. Hilarious sketch! Very popular in variety shows.

What's on TV? (10 minute comedy, 6 actors of either gender)
The narrator switches back and forth among the separate shows and creates a surprising and amusing juxtaposition of program material.
Such a fun show!

Silent Movie (15 minute comedy, 3 men and 3 women)
Everyone has had a seating issue at the movies. Watch as these seniors work it out without saying a word. Michaellene says this show was the "hit of the production!"

Group of the Month: Golden Age Theatre
Stanley's Choice in performance
Stanley's Choice in performance
Twice a year, The Golden Age Theatre in New Westminster, BC, Canada performs to full houses at the Century House Senior Centre. The group, now in their 15th year, performs to audience members who are wrinkled and laughing but with a good number of non-wrinkled people in the crowd, also laughing.

Director Margo Prentice says she "uses scripts from the Senior Theatre Resource Center because they are great plays," like Stanley's Choice. The cast ranges in age from sixty to eighty-six with a nice balance of men and women. They have a core of actors who have been with the group from the beginning. New members first work as crew and eventually graduate to performing on stage.

Margo Prentice has made her mark as a popular stand-up comedienne. Read about her by clicking the link!
