Bonnie's column: Build
visibility for your Senior Theatre community
|
|
Bonnie L. Vorenberg
|
When we realized that several local Senior Theatres were
producing shows in June, our marketing staff jumped into action. The
goal was to highlight the vibrant Senior Theatre scene in our
community. Based in different sites, some groups are in retirement communities
or senior centers, while others feature seniors who live in their own
homes. Older actors, from frail to active, appear in many different
forms, from short plays to musical revues.
We wrote a news release and sent it to the media. A few
days later we followed up with emails and phone calls to the major
sources. Then, nothing happened.
The world of media is changing. Outlets that used to print
considerable pages are now slimmer as they focus on web content. But
seniors still read newspapers, so the trick is to get the story printed
in hard copy.
After a
considerable amount of contact, an article was featured in the major
newspaper’s online version. We distributed the article widely using
social media and encouraged the other companies to do the same. It
became a "Most Read" feature and soon it appeared in the hard
copy entertainment section! We were thrilled.
The visibility encouraged more people in our community to
begin or expand working in Senior Theatre. Now, try doing this in your
area. When you lift up everyone, you lift up yourself!
Yours in theatre,

Number of
ArtAge performances in one year? 370!

Lunch Ladies at L'Ambrosia
Luncheria
|
We had so many
performances of ArtAge plays this spring, we wondered how many were
done in the past year? After careful research, we discovered that there
were a whopping 370
performances! That means, almost every day one of our
shows was on stage. Wow! Thank you!
We love to get photos
and testimonials from productions. Please send them in!
One of the most recent reports came from performances of Lunch Ladies at L'Ambrosia
Luncheria.
The Director said, "Lunch
Ladies at L'Ambrosia Luncheria" was the perfect entertainment for
our local Senior Center’s annual Strawberry Tea. While the ladies at
‘L’Ambrosia Luncheria’ were facing their dilemmas and comedic
solutions, the audience was thoroughly enjoying our antics and their
desserts. We were a hit! R.H.

Power Productions' auditions on August 6 and 7
|
|
Star Power Productions
|
Star Power Productions promotes
healthy, creative aging through theatre. Their next show, America
Salutes Our Veterans, is looking for singers, dancers,
comedians, and musicians over 60 years old.
The company, Senior Star Power,
started in 2008 under the leadership of Jackie Goldberg, the Pink Lady.
They have been filling houses ever since. The first Senior
Star Talent event was held last year. Over fifteen
finalists from a field of 225 applicants played to a sold out 300-seat
theatre. This year's show will be held in the 1300-seat historic
Wadsworth Theatre in Los Angeles for two performances on November 5 and
6.
The auditions will be held on
August 6 and 7. Contact seniorstarpower@gmail.com or call 818-400-2701 for more information.
