Bonnie's Column: What a Festival!

I just returned from the Senior Theatre USA Festival and once again, what an event it was! Running from Sunday evening through Wednesday night, it was filled with performances, workshops, and plenty of time to connect with other Senior Theatre lovers.

It was special to release our new musical, The Sunset Gang, to a standing room only audience who loved the show. Author, Warren Adler, and composer, L. Russell Brown, talked about how the show was inspired by Donna Reed. They then took us through the piece, telling the story and singing the songs letting us experience how the show unfolds. Audience members said the musical is a “positive statement about growing older, at any stage of life” as they raved about the story and the beautiful, singable, Broadway-sounding songs. Many attendees took home a free perusal to encourage their groups to stage the show.

Later in the Festival, we featured two plays by Linda LaRocque, Velma vs. Velma and Jus ‘Tus. The audience loved them, one person telling me the plays were the “Highlight of the Festival!”

Our collection was showcased and attendees enjoyed browsing through our many plays, books, and materials—now over 400 strong, featuring the work of 110 playwrights!

The Festival marked the conclusion of Arne Lindquist’s leadership as he retires with many accolades for a job well done.

We took plenty of photos so be sure to check out the link below. If you want to catch another Senior Theatre event, it’s not too late to make plans to attend the Senior Theatre Program at the ATHE conference in late July—see our article below, then join us!

Yours in theatre,

New Musical: The Sunset Gang

We're pleased to present the newest addition to our musical collection, The Sunset Gang, by Warren Adler author of The War of the Roses. This Off-Broadway musical features a score by L. Russell Brown, composer of Jersey Boys’ “C’mon Marianne,” and “Tie a Yellow Ribbon to the Old Oak Tree.”

The New York Times says The Sunset Gang is “A bittersweet musical about aging and desire…a deep examination of love and loyalty among people over 60."

The story follows the unforgettable residents of the Sunset Village retirement community. Love and lust blossom, bloom, and flourish. These characters are alive and kicking in a way that transcends the merely physical. It is, at its heart, a celebration of life!

The Sunset Gang was originally published as a collection of stories, three of which were adopted into PBS’s hit TV series American Playhouse. They met with critical acclaim, garnering Doris Roberts an Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Miniseries or a Special.

Enthusiastically received at the Senior Theatre USA Festival in Atlantic City, The Sunset Gang is perfect for your Senior Theatre!

This summer, we'll begin selecting new plays, books, and materials for our 2015-2016 catalog. Send in scripts you have written along with ideas about materials you think others would find useful.

For plays, we're looking for shows with a majority of older characters and plenty of female roles that challenge performers, yet are fun to stage. Our customers especially enjoy shorter plays but they also use scripts of all lengths, from straight plays to musicals, with either small or large casts. We especially like to read scripts that have been performed since the process improves the script.

We look forward to reading your work!
