Bonnie's column: A great conference!

Bonnie at the magical talkback

Bonnie at the magical talkback

What an excellent great time we had at the Senior Theatre conference in Chicago! Groups and professionals from around the country converged for the program, which included a musical revue by Committee of Two, readers theatre, and a session on how to choose plays for Senior Theatre. We learned about theatre in prisons, how the Ec-Lec-Tic Senior Players started, and how to perform one-person shows by Barbara Parisi. We even had a magical talkback session after the performances of Girlfriends and the Past Prime Players' colorful and fun piece based on African folklore.

The conference was great for making connections. We were thrilled that ArtAge playwrights
Bara Swain, who wrote The Hotel Lobbyist, and Richard Davis, Jr., author of The Naked Man on the Couch, attended our session about "How to choose plays for Senior Theatre."

Both seasoned and novice attendees said they were "delighted with the willingness of all to share ideas and lessons learned." As the Conference Planner, I was personally pleased to hear that participants thought the planning and organization was "exceptional." They said, "With seven sessions for novice to professional and after three days of immersion into every aspect of Senior Theatre, you couldn't help but come away with ideas and inspiration for future productions."

Feel like you missed something? If so, consider joining us next year when the conference is in Las Vegas! Look for our notice soliciting speakers and performers in the fall.

Yours in theatre,

Bonnie Vorenberg, ArtAge President

The STAR's in action

“Game Face On” for STAR-Senior Theater Acting Repertory of Queens, New York as the actors and singers prepare for their fall production, Season of Joy, Laughter and Fun. In the summer, the group adds new scenes and songs to the current repertoire so they can present new material for their senior audiences at libraries, senior centers, sororities, churches, temples, veterans' homes and rehab centers.

Presently, the group of twenty-five members range in age from 50-90+ with the goal of showcasing its members’ talents and promoting a more positive image of older, 'Young at Heart' adults. The STAR members’ spirits are always uplifted knowing that their comedy and songs have a positive effect on audience members who have few opportunities to see live theatre.
