Bonnie's column: What I learned at the Creative Aging Leadership Exchange

It's always great to know that you're amongst friends in a growing field. That's what happened when I ventured to Washington D.C. for the National Center for Creative Aging Leadership Exchange and Conference. The event brought together many practitioners, experts, and other interested persons to learn more about the practice, research, and business of Creative Aging.

We learned a lot, enjoyed the workshops and performances, met new friends and re-connected with old ones. But, most of all, we were reminded that we are on the right path. We were praised for developing the literature of the field and for leading the Senior Theatre movement towards more growth and innovation.

The future looks bright with new companies joining our ranks on a regular basis. They bring with them the passion that sustains all of us as we strive to help older adults fulfill their theatrical dreams.

Yours in theatre,

Bonnie

Book of the Month: Seniors Acting Up
Seniors Acting Up
Seniors Acting Up

This best selling book of plays includes ten amusing one act plays, six skits, and additional information such as how to cope with stage fright. Plots range from the bittersweet final chapter of a caring waitress’ life to the zany carryings-on of a mountain clan obviously affected by excessive inbreeding!

The collection has been a mainstay for many Senior Theatres--they love the variety of shows in the book and ease of performing them. Take a look at the play descriptions and you'll know that it's a real winner!

AACTFest, a program of the American Association of Community Theatre, is the national Community Theatre festival which takes place from June 21-27. Community Theatres enter a production for adjudication then the best ones advance from state to regional and finally to a national performance at AACTFest. The Festival, both educational and entertaining, welcomes the public as members of the audience or as volunteers.

The Grand Rapids Civic Theatre and School of Theatre Arts is honored to host this year's competition. Please mark your calendars and be sure to come and see some of the nation’s finest Community Theatre talent.

Senior Theatre is a focus of the community theatre event as they expand their programs to reach out to older performers. ArtAge President, Bonnie Vorenberg, will present two workshops: Directing Older Actors and New Ideas in Senior Theatre. We will also have our Senior Theatre booth so you can browse the many plays, books, and materials. Join us for an exciting time.
