Young at Heartland
Acting Workshop for Seniors
Heartland Theatre initiated its first acting workshop for seniors 55 and better in 2004. That six-week workshop for 10 members led to five performances for a total audience of 160. The workshop grew to 30 members, who performed to a total audience of 606 at 22 performances, in 2010.
Class sessions are dedicated to the study of the craft of acting in a fun, stress-free atmosphere. Class members collaborate with the instructor in choosing appropriate material to be memorized or performed as a reading, and then coached/directed by the instructor. Class registration fees, donations, and local arts grants support the program.
Members take their show “on-the-road,” visiting area senior residence centers, nursing homes, and local clubs and churches. Typically the troupe’s twelve summer performances include one Showcase performance in Heartland Theatre.
A second cycle of classes is held in August and September. These class sessions build on skills learned in the spring sessions and members work with new scenes to perform in eight shows in October. By special request the troupe has also provided special performances out-of-season.
Resident playwright, Terri Ryburn, wrote best-selling Age on Stage TM: Ten Minute Plays.
