The Sarasota Senior Theater was founded in Florida as a nonprofit corporation in October of 2000. Its members are 55 years of age or older, and are the living proof that being involved in Senior Theatre impacts the whole body. It improves physical, psychological, spiritual, and cultural health. Sarasota Senior Theater’s programs emphasize that life can be filled with the joy of being and contributing to human history. In 2002 the group started their Intergenerational Theater. Young people from ages 5 to 14 sing, dance, and act in performances together with the seniors. The audiences love the partnership. SST does not have a home, so they rely on the Senior Friendship Center, libraries, and churches for rehearsal space. They rent a theatre to perform their shows.
Their most recent show was The Magic Isle, written by Irene Silver, President and Founder of SST, with original music and lyrics by Michael Rizzo and Warren Silver. They performed the show again at the new theatre facility at Glenridge Retirement Community.
Irene Silver started performing as a tap dancer and singer in theatre when she was 3 years old. She studied Drama at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, and has been acting, dancing, and directing ever since. She has worked in Maryland, Michigan, Indiana, New Jersey, and Florida. Irene is proud of the progress Sarasota Senior Theater has made within the four years since its inception. SST now has 85 members. Clubs and organizations book the group for donation performances, and SST has been the recipient of several small grants.
