Roots & Branches Theater ('R&B') was founded in 1990 by performer, writer and director Arthur Strimling to develop theater workshops, productions and other arts-related programs that build understanding and respect between generations; celebrate the wisdom, energy and creativity of elders; and challenge stereotypes about age and aging. Since then, R&B has created and performed over twenty original plays based on life stories, improvisations and interactions between the generations, often framed through dialogue with classic plays' Romeo and Juliet, Three Sisters, King Lear, Antigone.
More than 100 young actors and 150 elders have worked with professional directors, writers and designers in hundreds of workshops and presented over 250 performances for underserved multicultural, multi-generational audiences, as well as Off Broadway theatres, universities and high schools, and conferences, including the International Conference on Senior Theatre. R&B has received continuous funding from the New York State Council on the Arts, the NY City Department of Cultural Affairs and numerous private and corporate sources.
Arthur Strimling, the director, is the author of Roots&Branches: Creating Intergenerational Theatre. Click here to read more about the company and Arthur’s work.
