“Nothing beats an eye-witness account!”
Footsteps of the Elders is an innovative professional touring company founded in l994 and directed by Sarah Worthington. The Footsteps Ensemble, women ages 70-84, work with their own life histories and improvisation to create performances sharing energy, reflection, and a trunk full of emotions to touch and teach. Footsteps focuses on women’s issues, challenging society’s perception of older women.
Footsteps’ performances include their signature play, Now You See Me, Now You Don’t- the invisible older woman, how she got that way, and why she doesn’t have to be nice anymore; Making Do- the Great Depression, when love and ingenuity overcame desperation; mini-performances, speakers, workshops and residencies. Footsteps’ bare-bones performance style offers presenters self contained performances requiring minimal technical support. Footsteps tours locally, nationally and internationally.
The company premiered two plays abroad: From Clothesline to Online, at the European Reminiscence Theatre Festival, London, England in 1995, and Time Tourists, European Senior Theatre Festival, London, England, 2000.
Footsteps of the Elders introduced an ASL enhanced performance of Now You See Me, Now You Don’t with guest artist, Wendell Barnes , ASL Artistic Shadow Interpreter from Atlanta, GA, in a premier performance at Senior Theater USA, Orlando, FL in Jan. 1999. They showcased their ASL enhanced performance at the First World Senior Theatre Festival in Cologne, Germany (Oct. 1999), at the National Conference of the Association of Theater and Accessibility in Columbus, OH (June 2001), and at the International Senior Theatre Festival, in Columbus, OH (Aug. 2002).
Footsteps of the Elders, a charter member of the Senior Theatre League of America, co-hosted the International Senior Theatre Festival.
