The Senior Theatre Festivals are held every two years. They are so special, that we are dedicating this issue to the upcoming Festival. It will be held in Baltimore from June 10-15, 2008. Check out the performances, workshops and the special events. It's not too late to join us!

"New Trends in Senior Theatre" workshop will be presented by Bonnie Vorenberg, the ArtAge President. Using our unique position as the central clearinghouse for Senior Theatre information, you will learn about what's new in our field, the current highlights, and the future trends. The session will be held on Wednesday, June 11 from 9-10 AM.

"Tackling Your Thorny Senior Theatre Management Issues" workshop with Bonnie Vorenberg, ArtAge President. Bonnie will present with Joy Reilly, Artistic Director of Howling at the Moon who is also a Professor at Ohio State University. Using their 40+ years in Senior Theatre, they will address your most troubling Senior Theatre management issues. The session will be held on Thursday June 12 from 9-10 AM. 

Visit the Senior Theatre Resource Center Exhibit. We're bringing most of our Senior Theatre plays, books, and materials so you can look them over, read a bit, and decide which will work best for you. The exhibit will be held on Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday from 10AM to 2PM.

Playreadings of our special shows will be held at our exhibit during the Festival. Drop by, bring some friends, and take a moment to read some of our many scripts. Click here to see our catalog.

Senior Star Showcase gets a standing ovation at the 2006 Festival
Senior Star Showcase gets a standing ovation at the 2006 Festival

You won't want to miss the many Members of the ArtAge Senior Theatre Resource Center who are a part of the Festival. 

Senior Star Showcase is directed by Arne Lindquist who is the Festival Chairperson. His group will present "Once Upon a Mattress" on Wednesday, June 11 at 6PM and on Saturday, June 14 at 1PM. Click here to read more about the Senior Star Showcase.

Etc. Senior Theatre is directed by Dolores Kane, who is the Festival Manager. She will present "Acting Your Age" on Thursday, June 12 at 1PM. Part II of her talk will be presented on Friday, June 13 at 6PM. Click here to read more about the Etc. Senior Theatre.

Philly Senior Stage is presenting a workshop and two performances at the Festival. On Thursday, June 12 at 10AM, Director Robb Hutter, will speak about how to direct Senior Theatre in a retirement community. On Friday, June 13 at 7:30PM, the Shannondell Actors Studio will present "Improv: An Hour of Laughter and Mayhem." They'll appear again on Saturday June 14 at 1PM in "Senior Scintillating Scenes." Fabulous 50+ Players under the direction of Harriet Lynn will perform their very successful "Radio Daze" on Saturday, June 14 at 2:30 PM. Also, Harriet will speak about "Living History Productions" on Wednesday, June 11 at 10:30AM. Click here to read about Harriet's work.  

Autumn Players will present their show, "Rose," which recently received a standing ovation. The one-woman show highlights a strong woman and the many hurdles she lept over to have a full life. Act One will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at 7:30PM and Act Two will be held on Friday, June 13 at 6PM. Click here to read more about the Autumn Players.

The Travelers: A Roving Theatre Company will present "War of the Worlds" at 6:00PM and "Baby Snooks" at 7:30 PM, both on Wednesday, June 11. Click here to read more about the Travelers.

"A Bag Full of Miracles" author of the hit musical, Tom Northam, will present a workshop on "Taking the Fear out of Musicals." It will be held on Friday, June 13 from 10:30-12 noon. Click here to read about the musical.

"Age on Stage: Lifewriting your Monologue" author, Joy Reilly, will present a workshop on how to use memories to write, edit, and perform your own monologue. It will be held on Wednesday, June 11 at 11AM.

Playwrights will craft shows at the Festival

Playwriting Seminar. Several playwrights are meeting everyday during the Festival. They'll craft shows, edit the pieces, and read them at the conclusion of the event. Directed by OSU Professor and Heckart Contest Director, Alan Woods, this should be a special event not to miss. Click here to read more about the contest.

Plus: Gene Cohen will present a special address. He conducted the first statistical study about the value of arts and aging. The results are included in our "Senior Theatre TipSheet: Fundraising for Senior Theatre." Click here for details.

Attendees will travel to Baltimore's Inner Harbor for an afternoon of dining, shopping, and nightlife.

The Unexpected Company Time and Time Again Players will perform at the ATHE conference
The Association for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) and its Senior Theatre Focus Group will meet from July 31 to August 3 at the Grand Hyatt Hotel in Denver, Colorado. The Senior Theatre sessions include: 
  • New Innovations in Senior Theatre
  • Theatre: A Powerful Tool for Life
  • New and Immerging Scholarship: Using Theatre to Address the Difficult Issues of Life
  • Performing History: Translating Local and Regional History into Exciting Theatre for All Ages
  • Workshop: Improvisation: Crowds + Chaos=Comedy and Life
  • Performance: Performing New Works on Aging

See perfomances by the Unexpected Company Time and Time Again Players from Laramie Wyoming who will present "Fables, Foibles and Follies of Laramie City." In addition, Bob and Marsha Yowell will perform "Montana Love Story: Painter Charles Marion Russell and his Wife, Nancy."

A special focus of the conference is on improvisation and we're featuring Joy Reilly, Alan Woods, and Ed Greenberg in a special extended session. 

The ATHE group was the springboard for the Senior Theatre movement so it's always a great time to reconnect. It's a stimulating conference that promotes and expands Senior Theatre!
